Dr Judith Jade, affectionately known as Dr J, is an abstract artist, dentist and lecturer.
As both a Dentist and an Abstract Artist, my work exists at a unique crossroads where art and science meet. In my daily life, I balance the precision of a clinical world with the freedom of
artistic expression, two disciplines that might seem worlds apart but are inextricably linked in my journey. My practice in dentistry focuses on restoring physical well-being, while my art
seeks to evoke emotional and spiritual healing.
Ironically, much of my artwork now resides in the reception areas of clinics and healthcare
practices, spaces where patients wait with apprehension or stress. These are the same
environments I work in, yet now my art has become a source of comfort for both the patients
and the very doctors who practice alongside me. It is an unexpected but powerful connection
where healing extends beyond the clinical treatment room to the walls adorned with abstract
art that offer moments of peace, introspection, and even escape. What surprises even me is how
my art has found a place not only in medical centres but also at dental conferences, where I
showcased my paintings alongside scientific exhibitors. It is an unexpected blend because the
artwork was displayed in spaces traditionally reserved for technical presentations. Yet, this
duality speaks to the deeper connection between art and science.
My artwork is a reflection of my personal experiences and the emotions I encounter daily. Each piece is an exploration of the unseen and the unspoken, the internal landscapes we navigate.
The process of creating abstract art allows me to express complex emotions and states of mind
that are difficult to capture through representational art. It is through this fluid, spontaneous
form that I find freedom and connection, both with myself and with those who engage with my
work.
My love for histopathology, the microscopic study of disease, also influences my art. The intricate, unseen patterns of cells under the microscope find their way into my canvases, blending science with creativity in a way that feels deeply personal and transformative. These unseen patterns inform my creative process, reflecting the hidden layers of life, both biological and emotional and that are often overlooked. My art, like my work in dentistry, aims to uncover what is beneath the surface, translating the complexity of our internal worlds into abstract
compositions.
Art is not just something I create for myself; it has become a tool for others to find healing. The textures and colours of my paintings provide a soothing visual experience, offering a moment of mindfulness and calm to those who encounter them, whether in a waiting room at a private space. My work bridges the gap between the tangible and intangible, where the hands of a doctor and hands of an artist both seek to restore balance, one in body, the other in spirit.
At the heart of my work is a deep sense of irony and fulfilment. As a dentist, I have been trained to diagnose and treat Maxillofacial and Oral conditions, ultimately restoring physical well-being. Yet through my art, I have found a way to offer something unique and special; a sense of emotional healing, serenity, and reflection that transcends the medical field. My purpose is not only create, but to foster moments of healing whether in the clinic, or through abstract art that speaks to the soul.
